Every May we love to showcase a number of poems that students have submitted. Here are our favourites for 2022!
Hunger.
Cold hunger.
Falling deeper and deeper into the longing for more.
Satisfaction is no longer in the picture.
Only power.
Power is a dangerous thing,
A dangerous game, in which you need to keep your hand close to your chest.
The more you have, the more you want.
The more you need it.
Nothing can compare to the glory of having it.
And nothing is worse than being powerless,
Standing at the edge, relying solely on another.
Having power creates enemies,
Along with friends.
Having power breaks people,
And creates people.
Everyone calls you a leader, but what really leads our community?
Our country?
Our world?
Power.
Power rules us all, whether we want it to, or not.
Power is everything, yet something we made up.
Power is fictional, yet the most real thing we have.
Power is purely in our minds, yet we follow its every lead.
Power is the true leader

I want to do one thing and I know that I should
It’s the best course of action, I well understood.
But 8 o’clock comes and I’m still in my bed
Even though nothing hurts, not even my head.
Their wounds cut so deeply when I did hear
Comments about me from friends who were dear.
Now it’s a school day and I must go in
And deal with this conflict without and within
We hung out last year and had lots of fun
Until summer happened, when it was all done.
Tough stuff at home, almost more than I could bear
Drove me down a different path far away from there.
Sure we met up once for lunch at the mall
But I couldn’t focus, no, not at all.
Shopping for clothes, makeup or books
Couldn’t engage me so off I took.
How do I act? What do I say?
Am I stuck here or is there another way?
The wisdom of years is not on my side
I’m only 14 and filled with my pride.
So I swallow it as best as I can and try to smile.
And when they walk past me, I give them a mile.

Boiling Pot
There once was a pot
Its contents were so hot,
A horse stepped in and hurt himself
And away he did trot
— Cameron Smith
To Cope
The day has given us more time
As my hearts to the chimes
The chimes of the bird that sings in the spring
Meanwhile slowly lose everything
Changing the world building up hope
Chipping away at my heart as I try to cope
Forgetting who I am as the world crumbles
Trying to escape this infectious bubble
As I sit all alone counting the seconds
Of the new day that will burn to reckons
I remember the days when things were bright
But now we live in a world of pure fright

When I Die
When I die
I’ll become a tree
My body used as fertilizer
My leaves decorated with a bee
A friend will plant a flower
And I’ll watch it grow
They’ll read a book against me
I’ll be there, they’ll know
When I die
My family will visit
Whether it’ll be many hours
Or just stopping a minute
When I die, time won’t slow
My roots will grow weary
My leaves drooping low
Soon I’ll decay
To nothing but dust
But I’d grown seeds
And within them there’s trust
My seeds are me
And eventually they’ll grow
Stretching for the sky
A bird singing hello
And maybe one day
I’ll reunite with a friend
Our matter uniting together
Acquaintances again
When I die
I’ll become a tree
My body used as fertilizer
My leaves decorated with a bee

The ocean calls to everyone,
The salty winds whipping through your hair.
The towering waves casting shadows,
Seagulls calling out, creating a song only they can understand.
Sand in between your toes,
Damp from the waves crashing over it again and again,
But warm from the heat of the sun.
The warmth touches more than just your body.
It touches your very soul.
A cloud drifts over your head,
Covering the sun’s rays,
The light yellow resembles more than just heat.
It shows hope, happiness, radiating from the mellow light.
Pods of whales splash and play in the shallow waters,
White caps racing towards you.
A stray wave catches you off guard,
Water spraying you up to your knees.
Laughter echoes from every side of the beach,
Joining into the chorus of the seagulls,
The waves,
The gentle breeze running through the few trees scattered across the sand.
A toddler waddles over to you,
A grin splitting across their face.
They hold a red bucket in one hand, the other stretched out towards you.
The smile is contagious.
You feel your own lips starting to rise into a soft grin.
You stand for hours, listening, looking, feeling the very ocean.
The waves rush around your body, goosebumps prickle across your skin,
As the sun fades into the far horizon.
The ocean calls to everyone.
But few answer the call.

Gryffindor Seeker
I wake up in my dorm, the room flashing red and gold in colour.
My stomach starts to flutter.
I rush to the great hall in a hurry, even if it’s not a race
I start to slow down my pace as I smell sizzling bacon hit my nose hard
Even though it would be lovely to munch on brunch, I have a hunch
Wood is going to get us going
Gryffindor’s and Slytherin’s alike continue giving each other a look of loathing
All of a sudden both quidditch teams jump straight in the air
ready for a vicious match
Later, our groups walk out onto the enclosed field
Both teams wield their broom like the mighty Gryffindor sword
Quite a bit in the game I see the glitter of the snitch
I twitch, my instincts taking over
Draco also seems to see it too
We launch full speed in assault towards the frail thing,
“just a little more” I think
Then I feel the snitches tiny wing
I heard a roar like war broke out.
I see the chasers, beaters, and keeper cheer, for me,
The Gryffindor seeker.
